The theme and look of this week’s location reveal for our upcoming DLC, At the Heart of Ruin, is quite different from the previously teased ones, all fiery and desolate. It is true that vagri who brave the Mountains of Fire will mostly traverse a volcanic hellscape replete with peril of the scorching variety, but what lies beneath is also intriguing.

As is apparent from the image above, a vast network of caves can be explored under the mountains, though intrepid adventurers might at first find it difficult to enter them. This underground world has its own biomes, denizens, rules, and secrets that players will be able to discover once the DLC releases.

Of particular interest today are the expansive mushroom fields that propagate in many of these cavernous chambers. Individual stalks can grow to the size of trees, creating entire forests of fungi that stretch for miles. There is no end to the variety of mushrooms in such an environment: some are edible, like the ghost mushrooms cultivated in the Empire, while others emit spores able to reduce a grown person to a slavering beast in minutes. Still, boletus niteis, the greenglow mushroom, is the most common. These fungi are known for their fluorescent, pale green light and great potential size, often providing illumination and shelter to the explorers of the subterranean world.
